Humboldt University Berlin: Berlin School of Mind and Brain International Doctoral Programme

Deadline for students applying for the programme and for one of the School's own scholarships (i.e. for all those currently without funding): 15 January

Applications by students who have secured funding (e.g. scholarships from funding agencies such as DAAD or Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, or have been offered research grants or research positions by their supervisors) will be accepted on a continuous basis throughout the year. Exclusive deadlines for these latter applicants (in addition to 15 January): 15 May and 15 September

The Berlin School of Mind and Brain is an international research school, located in the vibrant heart of Berlin. Founded in 2006 as part of Germany's Excellence Initiative, it offers a unique three-year interdisciplinary doctoral programme in English in the mind/brain sciences.

Research within the School focuses on the interface between the humanities and the neurosciences. Of particular interest are research areas that fall on the borders between the mind sciences (e.g., philosophy, linguistics, behavioural and cognitive science, economics), and the brain sciences (e.g., neurophysiology, computational neuroscience, neurology, and neurobiology). Major topics of research within the programme include: conscious and unconscious perception, decision-making, language, brain plasticity and lifespan ontogeny, mental disorders and brain dysfunction, and the philosophy of mind. However, research is not limited to these areas, and students are strongly encouraged to develop and work on their own initiative on any projects that are relevant to interdisciplinary questions relating to mind and brain.

The school offers a number of scholarships (currently 1,150 EUR per month) to the best applicants. Students who were not successful in winning one of the school's own scholarships will receive support in obtaining alternative sources of funding (e.g. a research post within a university department or with one of the school's research groups, or help in finding alternative funding sources for a scholarship).

All students will receive financial support from the school for conference travel.

Humboldt University additionally administers several scholarship programmes: forschung.hu-berlin.de/research/young_scientists/standardseite

Monmouth College has had a longtime commitment to welcoming international students, but it is now stepping that up with the introduction of two generous scholarships.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Merit Scholarships

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a highly selective technological university offering degrees with 40 majors in the pure and applied sciences, engineering, computer science, management and business administration, and the liberal arts. Located in Worcester, Massachusetts, WPI has outstanding teaching facilities and laboratories and a unique academic program that emphasizes professional-level, individually advised project work.

All admitted applicants are automatically considered for academic merit scholarships. The exact amount of the scholarship will be determined by the criteria noted for each award; however, amounts typically range from $10,000 to $25,000 per year. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study. Most noteworthy, valedictorians, salutatorians, and IB diploma graduates with a diploma score of 40 or greater admitted to WPI are guaranteed an academic merit scholarship package worth a minimum of $20,000 per year.

In addition to merit scholarships WPI offers a limited number of need-based scholarships to international students. Because WPI has limited funds available specifically for talented international students, only a portion of the admitted international students are awarded each year. The awards vary in amount, but typically range from $5,000 to $25,000. These awards are renewed each year, provided the student remains in good academic standing. WPI does not guarantee to meet applicants' full financial need and no combination of awards will exceed the cost of tuition.

PhD Student and Postdoctoral Positions in Industrial Engineering and Management at Aalto University

Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland –the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The university’s ambitious goal is to rank among the top universities in the world in its areas of specialization. At Aalto there are 20,000 students with around 75,000 alumni. We have a staff of 4,500 including 300 professors.

Aalto University School of Science, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, invites applications for two positions:

PhD student and postdoctoral position in a research program on corporate initiative programs

Full-time doctoral student(for the period of February 2012 to December 2014) and postdoctoral researcher (for the period of February 2012 to February 2014) positions are open at the Institute of Strategy of the Department of Industrial Management. The starting date is negotiable and subject to high quality of the research work and subject to new funding, it may be possible (but not guaranteed) to renew the contract at the end of the period. The research work will be part of a research program led by Professor Thomas Keil that covers strategic initiative programs and is funded by the Academy of Finland.

The topic
To stay competitive firms need to renew and transform over time. Such renewal rarely happens through individual activities such as internal initiatives, new business ventures, alliances, or an acquisition. Rather, it frequently requires programs of multiple coordinated actions over time, often referred to as corporate initiative programs. Corporate initiative programs are an important, yet understudied mechanism through which corporations execute their corporate strategic priorities. At the core of the research program on corporate strategic initiative programs are questions of how firms design the corporate initiative programs and what management structures they use to steer them.

Candidate profile for the Doctoral Student position
The candidate will meet the following requirements:
-a recently completed master’s degree in industrial management, business administration, economics, or technology management with a very good grade-average. A student with all completed course work and an almost final draft of the thesis may be considered if all other requirements are met
-has at least a basic knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods demonstrated with a completed course work or in the thesis or other research work delivered with the application

Candidate profile for the Postdoctoral Researcher position
The candidate(s) will meet the following requirements:
-a recently completed doctoral degree in industrial management, business administration, economics, or technology management
-preferably at least one published article (or in advanced review stage) in a high quality journal

-has strong knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
In addition, candidates for both positions should intend to pursue an academic career and to publish in top journals. Excellent writing capabilities and fluency in written and spoken English are a necessary prerequisite.

Positions
In addition to the main research duties, the successful applicants will conduct assistant work and otherwise contribute to teaching and administrative activities as instructed by the supervisor.

Aalto University follows the new salary system of Finnish universities. Current departmental starting salaries for doctoral student positions are around 2500€ per month and for postdoctoralresearcher positions around 3500€ per month.

The research group
The Institute of Strategy at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management consists of six professors and about 40 researchers, including PhD students. In terms of research output in top-tier journals the Institute of Strategy has in recent years been among the most productive strategy units in Europe. Active research at the Institute covers a broad set of topics including corporate strategy, corporate ventures, high-growth entrepreneurship, industry evolution, innovation management, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic renewal. The Institute offers a good environment for world-class research activity in strategic management. For additional information, please see http://tuta.tkk.fi/en/research/institute_of_strategy/ or contact Professor Thomas Keil (thomas.keil@aalto.fi or telephone: +358 45111 3042).

How to apply
Please submit your application by email to the registry of Aalto University, kirjaamo@aalto.fi, consisting of:
-Cover letter explaining your reasons to apply to the offered position and why you believe you are a suitable candidate
-Curriculum vitae (with contact details)
-University transcripts
-Master thesis/ doctoral dissertation or other research papers
-A 2-3 pages essay (in English) on the topic: “Why are strategic initiatives important for corporate strategy?” It can be beneficial to review the Institute’s publication list and do a small scale literature review as part of the essay. Please do not exceed the 3 pages requirement.

Closing date: Thursday 15th December 2011

Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.

The application materials will not be returned.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Social Sciences at the University of Sydney

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWS (2 POSITIONS)
FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AND FACULTY OF MEDICINE
SCHOOL OF PHILOSOPHICAL AND HISTORICAL INQUIRY AND CENTRE FOR VALUES, ETHICS AND THE LAW IN MEDICINE
REFERENCE NO 1836/1011

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7,500 permanent staff supporting over 49,000 students.

The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has a proud history of intellectual rigour and offers a vibrant research and teaching environment. The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) is one of five schools in the Faculty, made up of the departments of Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History, Gender and Cultural Studies, History and Philosophy. The School brings together an exciting group of academics and students who participate in a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is home to some of the leading researchers and teachers in Australia and the world, as well as regularly hosting prominent visitors and international colloquia.

The Department of History at the University of Sydney, founded in 1891, is a leading centre for research and teaching offering a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study in many fields including American, Chinese, Australian, and Medieval, Early Modern and Modern European history.

The University of Sydney invites applications from qualified individuals for appointment to Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in the comparative or transnational history of racial thought and practice in settler societies of the Global South, as part of Professor Warwick Anderson’s ARC Laureate Fellowship project ‘Southern Racial Conceptions: Comparative Histories and Contemporary Legacies’. Each of the two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships is for a period of three years initially, with the possibility of renewal for a further two years.

The historical research project will investigate how biological and anthropological sciences shaped what it meant to be human in the southern hemisphere during the 20th century—from skull measuring to early genomics. Through comparative study, we aim to reveal active and influential debates over racial difference conducted by scientists and anthropologists within the southern hemisphere, often distinct from those occurring in the North Atlantic.

It is expected that each Postdoctoral Research Fellow will investigate specific and distinctive southern racial formations, networks, and influences. Research on non-Anglophone southern scientific networks and on Indigenous perspectives or impacts would be particularly appealing. The Fellows will maintain their own high-quality research programs while contributing to the work of other researchers in the project and assisting in organizing research workshops.

The successful applicants must have a Ph.D. in history or a related discipline relevant to the theme of the project. Applicants should demonstrate an outstanding capacity for research as well as the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues from a range of different disciplines.

The positions are full-time, fixed term for three years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period, with a possibility of renewal for a further two years. Membership of a University-approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
